The Legislature made immense progress last session to support and provide for Oregon’s most vulnerable citizens. We were productive, efficient, and took bold action to ensure that our state moves forward and emerges from the global recession with a vibrant economy and strong public services intact.

We focused on revitalizing Oregon’s economy by creating thousands of jobs through the Jobs & Transportation Act and Capital Construction packages at universities and community colleges across Oregon. We passed biofuel and renewable energy legislation, and laid the groundwork for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and streamlined access to business loans and grants to boost job creation and stimulate business development.

We invest in our most precious resource—our kids—by keeping our promise to maintain funding for K-12 schools and Head Start, and providing $1 million in new resources for Early Head Start and fortifying the Oregon Opportunity Grant.

We expanded health care coverage to more than 115,000 children and adults who would not otherwise receive insurance, while creating 3,600 health care jobs.

We protected Oregon’s communities and neighborhoods by adding 139 new State Troopers for around-the-clock coverage, toughened laws on identity theft and Internet predators, and crafted a law to prevent school cyber-bullying.

Finally, we responded to Oregonian’s needs by improving state audits to ensure government efficiency, cracking down on metal theft and predatory lending practices, increasing funding for OPI and nursing homes, and leading the successful creation of Oregon’s Rainy Day Fund.
